About this camp: Zhongli District in Taoyuan City, originally settled by the Hakka people, features rich cultural heritage including Japanese-style buildings and century-old shops influenced by the Laojie River. The aim of this workcamp is to preserve the historical context of the Zhongli Laojie District and promote cultural exchange among local and international youth.
Work: – The area was settled by the Hakka people and named Jianzai, surrounded by Laojie River and Xinjie River.- It was renamed Zhongli Street during the Japanese colonial period, serving as a major north-south connection.- The Laojie District is home to significant cultural heritage including Japanese-style architecture and Hakka culture.- The workcamp aims to raise awareness of local history and promote cultural preservation.- Chung Yuan Christian University fosters community engagement through service-learning initiatives.
Accommodation and Food: – Accommodation will have floor beds; participants must bring their own sleeping bags.- Meals are provided by the CYCU Service-learning Center, with opportunities for cultural cooking exchanges.- A local clinic is located just a 10-minute walk for any first aid needs.
Leisure Activities: – Participants can explore the LONGANG Zhongzhen Market for local culture.- Daxi Old Street is recommended for historical insights and experiences.- Visit Taoyuan City Library or Longgang Branch for additional cultural engagement.
