What does “home” mean after a time of disruption and separation? Through the lens of “Winter Chants”, we invite you to step into Ho Chung New Village — a community in Sai Kung with over 500 years of history — and reflect on the meaning of home. Can the culture and traditions of rural villages continue to thrive amidst rapid urban development?
VolTra warmly invites you to the VolTra Screening: “Winter Chants”, part of the Glocal Leader Academy Intercultural Bootcamp 2025. The film captures the preparation of a major village ritual — the once-in-a-decade Taiping Qingjiao festival — against the backdrop of the pandemic and intergenerational transition. It reveals the deep-rooted love for the land and unwavering commitment to preserving a sense of home.
Following the screening, you’re invited to join an open dialogue with the film director, local villagers, and international participants of bootcamp, as we explore how traditional cultures around the world adapt to a fast-changing modern society.

About the movie “Winter Chants”
Winter Chants is set in Ho Chung village in Sai Kung, Hong Kong during the once-in-a-decade Tai Ping Ching Chiu Festival, when villagers and far-flung family members come together to pray for peace and harmony.
As the sequel to Tsang Tsui-shan’s earlier work Flowing Stories (2014), set during the previous Tai Ping Ching Chiu Festival and tracks Ho Chung Village’s myriad changes over the years, Winter Chants documents the preparation for the upcoming festivities.
However, in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, hundreds of those living overseas were unable to return to Hong Kong, while foreign domestic workers were stuck in the city. With the local population aging rapidly, the fate of the festival hangs in the balance. Over a period of four seasons, the film explores the themes of family and separation through the eyes of two festival committee members from different generations, interspersed with stories about village life and overseas villagers who participate in the festival via video.
